The Vaasa Hospital District has entered the spreading phase of the epidemic on 20.12.2020. According to the recommendations, higher education institutions will continue in distance learning mode at this stage, arranging only compulsory contact teaching.

We will continue with distance learning mainly until the end of the semester. However, we will open campuses on November 2. and we'll carry out the necessary small group teaching on campus. On campus, we always wear masks. Staff work remotely where possible, in accordance with the national recommendation, but the campus is open for campus work.

VAMK will adopt a new course feedback system SPARK, integrated into Peppi on Monday 26 October. At this stage, the final feedback of the course is taken into use, later we can also gather continuous feedback and interim feedback through the system.

Finland’s coronavirus situation is rapidly deteriorating, and there are also chains of infection among students at universities of applied sciences. This has led to an increase in distance learning and even to the closure of campuses in different parts of Finland.

At Vaasa University of Applied Sciences, coronavirus infection has been diagnosed in at least 15 students. Exposure mapping work is still partly in progress. Further infections may still occur.

Five students at Vaasa University of Applied Sciences have now been diagnosed with COVID-19 infection. Exposures are still being investigated. Additional infections are likely to occur. Authorities are being in contact with those exposed and quarantining individuals when the situation so requires.

According to Heikki Kaukoranta, the doctor responsible for infectious diseases in the city of Vaasa, VAMK has not been exposed. VAMK's operations will continue in a safe manner according to the previous plan.

Teaching will continue in the fall as contact teaching. The 1st year students of the programs taught in English International Business and Information Technology will start the year as remote teaching. IB and IT students of 2nd till 4th year will start in hybrid teaching according to teachers instructions. All lectures for more than 40 people are considered remote teaching. The preparedness group meets weekly and, if necessary, takes measures to ensure a safe working and study environment. Changes will be communicated if necessary.

Overall, the teaching staff of Vaasa University of Applied Sciences has been satisfied with the remote teaching. Despite occasional disruptions, the technology has worked better than expected. Experiences of distance learning were investigated in a nationwide survey. 1561 members of the teaching staff of polytechnics responded to the survey.

The entrance examination for universities of applied sciences will be carried out in June in two separate stages. The first stage of the examination will be organised on 4 June 2020 as a digital distance examination. The second stage of the examination will be organised on the campuses of universities of applied sciences in different parts of the country on 23-25 June 2020.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the Reboot pilot training, originally designed to be delivered as blended learning, is delivered virtual in spring 2020.The pilot involves unemployed and underemployed higher education graduates, as well as coaches and trainers, in Finland, Belgium, Greece and the United Kingdom.We want to thank all pilot training participants during these challenging times.

Due to the exceptional circumstances, it is not possible to normally hold a spring graduation ceremony at Vaasa University of Applied Sciences. After consulting the students, the management team decided that the celebration will be held remotely at the original time on 22nd May. More detailed planning of the ceremony will start right at the beginning of the week.

The universities of applied sciences have, in view of the pandemic situation, decided that the second joint AMK entrance examinations this spring will be organised online. There were 92 000 applicants to the universities of applied sciences by the end of the application period on 1 April. 75 000 of those sought admission in the joint application examinations.

The Finnish Network for International Programmes (FINNIPS) arranged entrance examinations for 10 Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences’ English-taught degree programmes in 10 countries around the world between 10 and 15 March. The examinations will be checked in the network’s UASs and the results of student selection based on these exams will be announced from 21 April onwards (and by 5 June 2020, at the latest).
