From Coastal Mozambique to the Energy Technology Hub of Finland

Marko has always been passionated about technology, with a strong interest in physics and mathematics and his dream came true when he started his studies at VAMK in 2023.

Before Marko´s studies began in Finland he completed several internships, gaining valuable experience while awaiting his university admission. He was looking for a practical studies which includes extensive laboratory work and projects. Luckily VAMK was offering those things so he wanted to come to study in Vaasa.

“I chose Finland because of it´s reputation for happiness and high quality of life. Vaasa felt familiar and cozy, reminding me of my hometown Beira.”

Life at VAMK and in Vaasa

When Marko came to study at VAMK he quicly noticed that the student community was incredibly open and supportive, making it easy to settle in and feel at home. Adjusting to Finland was a bit challenging at first, since he arrived in the late autumn, but the support from his friends and new mentor made him adapt into this new enviroment.

“I quickly learned that the effort I put into my studies directly impacts my success. Outside of academics, I balance my life by playing football and swimming, which helps me manage stress and stay refreshed.”

“Vaasa itself is a beautiful city with endless opportunities for exploration. I’ve enjoyed discovering its hidden gems and always find something new to do.”

Achievements and looking ahead

Marko has also been a part of Vaasa´s Energy Academy mentoring program which is also one of his proudest achievements so far. He has received lot of mentorship guides from professionals in the Vaasa area especially from his own mentor Ville Rasi from Hitachi Energy.

“This experience has significantly shaped my educational and career goals.”

After his graduation he has plan to use IT education to pursue a Master’s degree and eventually make an impact in the energy and technology industries.

“For anyone considering studying at VAMK, my advice is simple: keep an open mind. The opportunities are numerous, the experiences priceless, and the memories will last a lifetime.”
