Project description

Vaasa is the most important centre of excellence for electrical and energy engineering in the Nordic countries, characterised by the integration of companies and universities. There is also particular expertise in digitalisation and robotics in manufacturing industry. Technobothnia is a joint teaching and research laboratory complex of the University of Vaasa, Vaasa University of Applied Sciences and Yrkeshögskolan Novia. Technobothnia’s current equipment is partly obsolete and no longer meets the needs of RDI, business cooperation and training activities required by the dual transition. The investments of the group project will allow Technobothnia to upgrade its RDI environments to meet future needs.

The NGTB project will strengthen the dual transition by combining digitalisation with specific competences in electrical, energy and measurement technologies in line with industrial needs. The investments will be of great importance for the energy industry in the region, the development of offshore wind farms, autonomous shipping, surveying and construction, among others. The project will strengthen the competence of the Vaasa energy cluster and increase the attractiveness of the region.

Goals

The aim is to ensure the growth and competitiveness of the region’s industrial ecosystem through an up-to-date research infrastructure. To ensure the role of Ostrobothnia as a national and international hub for clean transition by providing state-of-the-art technology for the region’s RDI needs. The project will enable the necessary investments to be made.

Results

As a result of the investment project, Technobothnia’s research infrastructure will better serve the needs of Industry 5.0 in the region. The investment will promote technological excellence, provide new opportunities for important research areas such as artificial intelligence, automation and computer science, and increase opportunities for collaboration with other educational institutions, industry and research institutes. This will ensure that higher education teaching and research remains at the forefront of technological developments and is ready to meet the challenges of the future.
